I'm looking for a recent PC racing game or simulator that includes lots of GT and prototype racing. I say recent because I need it to work on Windows 7 and work with an Xbox 360 controller.

Race 07. Search it on Kotaku since they are giving copies for free.

Also, if you want the Steam version, it's being sold for $4 . And the expansion packs are great: moar GT cars, Formula 1-style cars, etc.
This site has many mods as well. Have fun!

Where what how?!

Can I set up my own races? The distances/time? Or what my opponents drive?

Yup! AI difficulty, tracks (with layouts), weather, damage level, laps/time limit, car classes, etc. Once you're in the session, you can go to your garage and change stuff like camber, brake bias, tires, etc. You can even move your seat around and change the FOV.
There's a WTCC championship, GT ones, and you can make your own too. It's great for its time, but the graphics are meh.

What about sound? Vacuums or actually decent?

it's in alpha, and in no way meets your stated requirements, so you'll have to forgive me on not actually providing a constructive reply, but Asetto Corsa is blowing my mind lately. I'm an addict. I had to say it.... Carry on.

Decent. There's stuff like brake whine, random ticks, gearbox whine, etc. Of course, there are mods if you don't like them.

PS: You should really get a decent FF wheel and pedals. Whole new ball game.... Very much worth the extra cost if you like racing.

Not really worth it on a laptop though.

I've been interested in it. Mostly because it has the Z4 GT3 and 458 GT2 and looks pretty.

It's gorgeous and the devs are making great progress. This is among the few alphas I've owned that will actually have a full release in the near future.
The gt cars are cool, but the lotus 98T is stealing the show for me at the moment. Also cool that there's a ton of community mods/cars/tracks coming out now. The MP is still a little rough but coming along now in the most recent updates.

Is 2006 recent enough? It runs flawlessly on my Win7 laptop, with a PS2 style controller.

Thank you very, very much. You are amazing.

Alrighty, it's downloading. Those of us who have this should get some racing going sometime.

rFactor with the EnduRacers mod installed. Has basically every ALMS, LMS, etc. car from the last 6 or so years in it. That may be enough Prototype and GT cars for you.

If you have a G27, can you tell me your settings? It seems like even the smallest slide ends up with me spinning.

I use a Fanatec wheel, but I found a huge factor is bumping the FF/Sent down considerably... Somewhere between 40-70 percent. At 100, it's just too much to control.
I also rrecommend changing the turn radius way down. Default is 900 degrees, I have mine about 360, but friends go into the 200's.
I'll ping my buddy who uses a g27 and reply back with more specific settings.

This is an accurate representation of my wheel right now.

loool! Yeah man, kick FF down to 40% and holler back!

Its better but catching slides is still impossible. I can drive and drift on Race 07 so it isn't me...
